Amazon.com Product Description:
The HL-5140 from Brother is a monochrome laser printer that features high quality print resolutions and a number of expandability options. Resolutions run as high as 2,400 x 600 dpi, thanks to Brother's HQ1200 technology, resulting in accurate and crisp images and text. Speeds of up to 21 ppm deliver documents quickly so that you're free to focus on other tasks.
With the 133 MHz Fujitsu SPARClite processor and 16 MB of internal memory (upgradeable to 144 MB), the HL-5140 is able to handle medium to large print jobs. Manual duplexing allows you to print double-sided documents. A 250-sheet standard input tray is accompanied by a single-sheet manual bypass tray and a 150-sheet output tray. An optional 250-sheet tray is also supported. The printer accepts a wide variety of paper types, including plain paper, envelopes, bond, transparencies, labels, and card stock. Supported sizes include letter, legal, executive, A4, A5, A6, and B6.
The HL-5140 connects to the host computer via either parallel or USB ports, and an automatic interface switching feature means you won't need to change any printer settings to print from either source. If you want to set up the printer on a network, optional Ethernet and wireless network interfaces are available. The 100/120 VAC 50/60 Hz power supply consumes about 460 watts of power during normal operation, about 75 watts during standby, and only 5 watts during sleep mode. Compatible with PC, Mac, and Linux operating systems, the HL-5140 also comes backed by a one-year limited express exchange warranty.

Broken after 4 years of minimal use
We got this printer 4.5 years ago and were very happy with it the whole time. We used it to print our wedding invitations on heavy stock paper as well as the envelopes using the manual feeder and were very happy with the results. The printer worked well hooked up to my apple airport express. The quality was good and the speed was satisfactory. We have probably printed less than 2000 pages in the lifetime of this printer and have only gone through 1 toner beyond the one that came with the printer. We almost exclusively print text and maps in light grey scale.
After having this for 4.5 years it started making a loud knocking noise and jamming all the time. The noise happened even with the drum removed. A local printer repair shop said that it would likely cost as much to repair this printer as it would to get a new one. The only reason that it did not get 5 stars is that it died after a period of very moderate use. We had hoped to get many more years out of this printer.

Brother Printer
I have had this printer for almost 2 years without problems. You can buy an over size toner cartridge. It's easy on the toner. Brother printers and good. I have several.

Great Little Printer
I had always been reluctant to purchase a laser printer for home. Given the premium you pay over ink jet printers and the amount of printing that actually takes place at home, it never seemed that it was worth the expense.
However, after throwing out my third "low cost" ink jet printer after a mere few months and factoring how much cartridges cost, I finally decided to take a serious look at low cost lasers. Glady I stumbled upon this little gem from Brother.
Two years and six reams of paper later, I can say that Brother makes wonderful low-cost laser printers that are perfect for home use.
While HP seems to be king in the workplace, in my opionion, their price is far too high for home use. Not to mention the fact that I've seen many, many problems with their lowest priced lasers. My Brother 5140 has been reliable (not a single jam, even with the envelope printing I've done) and cost effective. When you take into account the failure rates of inkjet printers, this will very likely end up saving you money.
One reason this printer is so reliable is that it uses a horizontal tray feed as opposed to a vertical feed (where the paper is loaded vertically in the back and comes out vertically in the front)used on many of the low end HPs. STAY AWAY from ANY printer that loads this way. Every one I've ever ran across develops major jamming and feed issues in a very short time.
All in all, I love my printer and recommend it to anyone who doesn't require color prints.

Great cost-effective personal printer but.....
Great cost-effective personal printer if you need to use it only lightly. If you need a heavy use machine (i.e., personal office, etc.) this printer is not the way to go. Paper has bad habit of jamming when it prints large batches and what is worse is that, many times, one needs to take the whole machine apart to fix the problem!!!

GOOD RELIABLE PRINTER
This is my second HL 5140. I bought the first for my dental office and it worked well. Quality and reliability is good. I've just bought another one for my second office. Very happy with performance. Overall a good value and replacement toner is also reasonable.
